Most garden soils have a pH between 5.5 and 8.0. This number helps you determine when and how to adjust your garden soil’s pH level. If the pH level is below 6, the soil may be too acidic, and you need to add ground limestone. If the measurement is above 7.5, the soil is too alkaline for most vegetables, and you need to add soil sulfur.

The pH range is 0 (extremely acid) to 14 (extremely alkaline) with 7 being neutral. When acidic soil is neutralized by liming, soil nutrients are made more available for the plants to absorb through their roots.

Soil pH is an excellent indicator of the suitability of a soil for plant growth. For most crops, pH of 6 to 7.5 is optimal. Soil pH levels that are too high or too low lead to a deficiency of many nutrients, decline in microbial activity, decrease in crop yields, and deterioration of soil health.
