Feb 28, 2025 · Mega Evolution (Japanese: メガシンカ Mega Evolution) is a temporary transformation introduced in Pokémon X and Y that affects certain Pokémon. It is present in the Generation VI and VII core series games, and is set to reappear in Pokémon Legends: Z-A.

Mega Evolutions are temporary battle forms of various Pokémon. These Pokémon need to have a special hold item in order to activate known as a Mega Stone. When a Pokémon's Mega Stone is activated alongside a trainer's Key Stone, the Pokémon will Mega Evolve into a stronger form.

Mega Evolution is a transformation affecting Pokémon. Mega Evolutions are identified by having "Mega" in front of their name. In order to Mega Evolve, the Pokémon must be holding the appropriate Mega Stones (with the exception of Rayquaza which is only required to know the move Dragon Ascent).

Pokémon X & Y introduced a new type of evolution called Mega Evolution. When holding a particular Mega Stone (specific to each Pokémon), certain Pokémon can Mega-Evolve in battle. Mega Evolution is in fact more like in-battle form changes.

Pokemon X and Y brought us the power of Mega Evolution, which has made some Pokemon much more viable in OU while being simply equipped with a Mega Stone. Either way, Mega Evolution has certainly become a very significant and almost centralizing aspect in the metagame, and it's very easy to see why.
