I think that Johnny Depp's Willy Wonka is way better than Gene
The point is, Wilder's Wonka likes being a dick. Depp's Wonka is fucked up and wants to some extent to be normal, loved, accepted. So despite hating his medieval peasant haircut and the bizarre vocal pitch/inflections Depp used, I think Depp's Wonka is the more interesting character.

Jun 3, 2017 · Depp's Wonka wasn't the manipulative genius Wilder was, and IIRC, neither was Dahl's. Burton added a depth, (an admittedly cliche depth) but a depth that made the book's resolution make sense within the story. TL;DR - Depp's Wonka legitimately didn't understand Charlie's reluctance, so the subplot was necessary.

Jul 12, 2023 · I was a big fan of the Gene Wilder one as a kid despite the fact that it came out two decades before I was born. When the Depp one came out I saw it in theaters and had a pretty good time. Something about the weirdness of the Willy Wonka fiction I just really enjoyed, and paired with the Tim Burton brand of weirdness made for an enjoyable time.

The depp one is closer to the book. I will likely get downvoted because people like the first one a lot better for nostalgia reasons, but it's just true. They had better technology to display what the book wanted to get across, hell, they even changed the whole squirrel scene to the geese and golden chocolate eggs or whatever in the Wilder film.
