The Jezreel Valley takes its name from the ancient city of Jezreel (known in Hebrew as Yizre'el; יזרעאל ‎; known in Arabic as Zir'ēn, زرعين) which was located on a low hill overlooking the southern edge of the valley.

Jezreel, meaning "God will sow," is situated in a beautiful valley. Yet it has a violent history in the Bible, including the deaths of Jezebel and Naboth, and battles involving King Ahab's family. Today, it reminds us of God's sovereignty and redemptive power in turmoil.

The Valley of Jezreel (ʿEmeq Yizreʿel), or Plain of Esdraelon, was an ancient trade route between the Jordan Valley and the coastal plain. Modern excavation in the area uncovered a distinctive gray-burnished pottery, which archaeologists now call Esdraelon ware.

It is known in Scripture by the Hebrew name "valley of Jezreel" (Joshua 17:16 Judges 6:33, etc.). It is called `emeq in Judges 5:15, which properly denotes "a depression," or "deepening," and is used more commonly of the vale running eastward between Gilboa and Little Hermon.
