It has served as a family home for members of the Bain family and Clan Davidson over the years. The Davidson tartan was first recorded in the Vestiarium Scoticum in 1842.

The Dress Tartans were designed as the name suggests for celebrations and highland dance. The sett or pattern of the tartan remains the same and the main colour is changed to white, or extra white is added to the pattern to give it a brighter, more "fancy" appearance.

This version of the Davidson tartan omits the white stripe of the earlier setts recorded by the Highland Society of London and in the Moy Hall collection. Uniquely among tartans there is also a 'Half Davidson' (STR #897) and a 'Double Davidson' (#896).

The Davidson tartan features a striking combination of dark green, navy, black, and red. Each color holds symbolic meaning: dark green represents the lush landscapes of Scotland, navy signifies loyalty and steadfastness, black embodies the strength of the clan, and red reflects courage and valor.
