Cylinder chess (or cylindrical chess) is a chess variant. The game is played as if the board were a cylinder , with the left side of the board joined to the right side. Cylinder chess is one of six chess variants described by the Arabic historian Ali al-Masudi in 947.

According to researcher Bill Wall, a cylindrical variant was mentioned (along with five other variants) in a book dated to 947 AD called Muraj adh-dhahab (Fields of Gold). [1]

Another name is Cylinder chess. The description below is due to Ron Porter. The game is played on a standard board, with standard pieces, normal opening setup. Moves of all pieces are also as in orthodox chess, but with this modification: Assume that the board is joined at the outermost ranks (A and H) as if it were a cylindrical board opened up.

The board can be seen as the surface of a cylinder, where the lower and upper side of the board is the two circles of the cylinder. Chess variant where the left and right sides of the board are joined. Pieces can go off one side and reapper on the other.

The modern form of Cylinder Chess is in fact played on a normal board, but the right and left edges of the board are imagined to be joined in such a way that a piece can move off one edge and reappear at the opposite edge, moving in the same or a parallel line.
