The Empire of Brazil was a 19th-century state that broadly comprised the territories which form modern Brazil and Uruguay until the latter achieved independence in 1828. The empire's government was a representative parliamentary constitutional monarchy under the rule of Emperors Pedro I and his son Pedro II .

First flag of the Empire of Brazil with 19 stars (1822–1853). On 29 August 1853, Imperial Law No. 704 created the Province of Paraná, resulting in the addition of a 20th star.

Jul 26, 2020 · The flag for the Brazilian Empire (1822-1889) was a green field, with a large yellow rhombus that stretches itself to the edges of the flag (unlike the current Brazilian flag). Inside the rhombus lies the Brazilian Empire´s coat of arms.

The flag design was inspired by the banner of the former Empire of Brazil (1822-1889). The National flag of Brazil features a green field with a large yellow diamond (rhombus), and in its center floats a blue celestial globe with 27 white five-pointed stars.

Starting in 1822, when the Brazilian empire was established, Brazil had three different flags, all very similar among themselves. In 1889, when Brazil proclaimed itself as a Republic, Rui Barbosa, a civil rights leader, proposed a drawing for the Brazilian that was very similar to the one of the United States.

Mar 7, 2024 · On the imperial flag, the green in the rectangle represented the coat of arms of the Bragança family, to which the first emperor of Brazil, Dom Pedro I, belonged. The yellow lozenge represented the Habsburg dynasty – which ruled Austria – the homeland of Dom Pedro I’s wife, Empress Maria Leopoldina.
