OpenAI was co-founded by Musk and Altman in 2015. Musk left OpenAI in 2018 and now alleges that the company has abandoned its founding mission to develop AI for the benefit of humanity, and is therefore in breach of contract. He first launched his suit in early 2024, before dropping it in June and re-filing in August last year.

OpenAI is suing Elon Musk over claims he has tried "nonstop" to slow down its business for his own benefit. The company accuses the Tesla boss of using "bad-faith tactics" against OpenAI to help him control cutting-edge AI technology.

Musk accused OpenAI of straying from its founding mission - to develop AI for the good of humanity, not corporate profit.
