Groundhog Day predictions about the coming of spring put the spotlight on Punxsutawney Phil every Feb. 2, but celebrating the midpoint between the shortest and darkest day of the year and the spring equinox has ancient roots in European agricultural life.

Today, Punxsutawney lore is showcased through Gobbler’s Knob, the home of Punxsutawney Phil and the location of his annual prediction party. It also incorporates various buildings such as a welcome center with interactive exhibits about Groundhog Day.

Feb. 2 is Groundhog Day! Did you know there is a special “groundhog punch” that keeps Punxsutawney Phil alive? This lets him see his shadow (or not).

In the cold early hours of Sunday, Feb. 2, the “Seer of Seers” will emerge from his cozy burrow in Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney, Pa., to proclaim whether or not there will be six more weeks of winter weather.

The groundhogs — along with a tortoise, whose emergence from his winter hibernation foretells the coming of spring, and a prairie dog statue, whose shadow at sunrise predicts how long it will be until spring arrives — were ranked based on their accuracy over the past 20 years, using the March temperature averages for the U.S., NOAA said.

Each year Punxsutawney Phil predicts whether there will be six more weeks of winter or an early spring when he emerges from his home in Gobbler’s Knob on Groundhog Day. WTAJ will air “Out of the Shadows” live at 7 a.
