Hughes crossed the puck in front of the goal with a jaw-dropping pass that somehow snuck under the outstretched legs of a diving Blues defender and ended up right on the stick of Garland, who tucked it away for his 12th goal of the campaign.

Garland, of all people, jabbed at Calvin Pickard when the Oilers goalie had the puck covered midway through the second period, which ignited a scrum behind the net. Perry quickly got involved. He was about to grab Canucks centre Elias Pettersson until he saw defenceman Quinn Hughes, who’d come in off his point, without a dance partner.

This is not the first time that McDavid has faced disciplinary action. He served a two-game suspension in February 2019 for a hit to the head on then-New York Islanders defenseman Nick Leddy. Additionally, he was fined $5,000 in March 2021.

Four-point games consume those on the outside of NHL playoff positioning. That urgency usually starts in March, not in late January. It speaks to the Vancouver Canucks and their level of desperation to turn a sour first half of this adversity and injury plagued season into a sweet push for a post-season berth.

Not since the players were toddlers have so many people delighted in their ability to count to two, but the Canucks earned their sound, 5-2 road win Monday against the St. Louis Blues after Saturday’s stout 2-1 victory against the National Hockey League-leading Washington Capitals.

There were a number of milestones and records written as the Vancouver Canucks beat the St. Louis Blues 5-2 at Enterprise Center. Head Coach Rick Tocchet said the team was ready from puck drop and was pleased with the way they set the tone early.
