A UNESCO World Heritage Site and a famous symbol of Paris, the Eiffel Tower is at the center of a burgeoning debate over Mayor Anne Hidalgo’s plan to retain the Olympic rings on the landmark after the 2024 Summer Olympics.

The Paris mayor says the Olympic rings will remain on the Eiffel Tower at least through 2028 but other says they should come down when the 2024 Games end

A temporary Olympic rings structure was installed in Paris on the Pont d'Iéna on Saturday in the presence of Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo and Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach, marking an important moment in the city's post-Games transformation.

You can’t disfigure the Eiffel Tower by giving it a sense that isn’t its own,” said Olivier Berthelot-Eiffel, Eiffel’s great-great-great-grandson.
