Mel Owens, a Detroit native and former Michigan linebacker, was named "The Golden Bachelor" of Season 2, ABC announced.

On April 22, ABC announced that the retired NFL player-turned-lawyer would step into the spotlight to find love among Bachelor Nation's next group of senior women. When host Jesse Palmer asked Owens how he felt about becoming the next Golden Bachelor during Disney's Get Real Event the next day, he replied, "Great."
