Musk said his group was on pace to cut $150 billion from the federal budget in one budget year. That would be a sharp drop from his previous stated goal of $1 trillion.

Billionaire Elon Musk said at a White House cabinet meeting on Thursday he expects $150 billion in savings in FY2026 from the work done by the Department of Government Efficiency. In March, Musk had said he was confident DOGE could find $1 trillion in savings.

As a special government employee, Musk is under a 130-day time limit in his current role as head of the unofficial agency.
