This scam poses as the Department of Motor Vehicles, only Michigan does not have a DMV. Rather, we have the Secretary of State’s Office to regulate our cars. The message claims that you have an outstanding ticket and threatens penalties if you don’t pay the fine.
Many Mainers got a suspicious text Monday morning. The Maine Secretary of State’s Office as well as many Maine police departments are warning people to not fall for the scam text that looks like it is coming from the “Maine Department of Motor Vehicles.
The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles is warning residents of a texting scam that is posing as an official Ohio BMV message.
The text scam states: "New York State Department of Motor Vehicles final notice: enforcement penalties begin" on a date a day or two away. The text threatens a 35% penalty to be charged at a tollbooth, 30 days’ suspension of a driver's license and damage to the driver’s credit rating, all of which is false.
The Iowa DOT warns they will never ask for personal or financial information - especially via text.
The messages from the non-existent Maine Department of Motor Vehicles claim the recipients' license or registration could be suspended unless they pay a fine. But state officials say they'd never notify drivers of violations via text message.
MDPS says the scam consists of a call or text to residents, saying they must pay a fine or their license will be revoked and/or their vehicle will be repossessed.
