We drove right up to the front and could easily park there. The buildings and grounds were beautiful. It would have been nice if we had been able to enter too.Full review by UKfamily123

Can we picnic as a group in the union buildings garden during the week. Is there a cost? Do we need to book?
A:
No cost just be careful, do not want to become a statistic. Would rather go to botanical garden for picnics safer because its closed of from the outside.

You find them in almost all the parks. So try to stay away from parks in the evenings

The Sheraton appears to be a very short walk across the road and into the park beneath the Union Building. It makes a pleasant walk through and around the park in day time. You must see the 9m tall Mandela statue and get a local photograper to take yor picture. Contrast with the Voortrekker Museum. We had an extensive tour of South Africa, some guided and some driving ourselves eg to the Zulu Battlefield Rorke's Drift etc and the Garden route. We never felt threatened or at risk even being driven on a private tour around Soweto (get your guide to take you to a bar for a beer there and dont miss the Aparthied and Henry Petersen Museums) and we dtove through the worst area of Hillbrow though we would not want to stop there but it provides a stark contrast. We took advice and left more expensive jewelery at home, wore cheap watches, kept an expensive Canon camera in hand and did not wander out alone at night. Not much different to being sensible in any other major city. South Africa is wonderful, the people are friendly and food and wine are both sublime and relative to UK cheap.
